Fire Outbreak at Nigerian Law School Kano Campus Hostel Highlights Concerns Over Poor Maintenance and Safety

A fire broke out at one of the student hostels at the Kano Campus of the Nigerian Law School on Wednesday evening, barely an hour after lectures had ended. Fortunately, no lives were lost, but the incident consumed property, books, clothes, and valuables belonging to the students.

Eyewitnesses reported that the cause of the fire could not be ascertained, but sources indicated that students and staff were trading blame. The management alleged that students were using contraband items like pressing irons and boiling rings, while the students blamed the management for poor maintenance of the buildings.

“The management is blaming us for using contraband items, but they are not taking care of the facilities,” said one student, who wished to remain anonymous. “The hostels are dilapidated, and there are electrical faults everywhere. We have reported these issues several times, but nothing has been done.”

Another student added, “The management told us during orientation that the rats, snakes, and scorpions on campus are ‘friends of the community and harmless.’ But how can they expect us to live in such an environment?”

The campus, which was formerly a hotel built over 40 years ago, is in a state of disrepair. The student hostels are unkept, dilapidated, and infested with rodents and reptiles. Dry grasses on the campus were either not cut or were burnt by staff members, which may have contributed to the fire.

Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed, the Deputy Director-General of the Kano Campus, was unavailable for comment as he had travelled to Abuja. Other officials, including the Director of Academics, Dr. Precious Ahiarammunnah, and the Head of Students Affairs, Hajiya Fatima S. Taiga, were also unavailable.

Staff members who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity expressed concerns about the poor state of the campus and the lack of maintenance. “We have been reporting these issues for years, but nothing has been done,” said one staff member. “It’s a miracle that no one was hurt in the fire, but it’s a wake-up call for the management to take action.
