Alhaji Sule Lamido, a prominent member of the PDP and a former governor of Jigawa State, has responded to Malam Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State, who invited politicians to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

El-Rufai declared last week that he has defected to the SDP from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

El-Rufai called on opposition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola, and others, to join him in SDP in a special interview, without specifically naming Lamido.

Sule Lamido, however, vehemently objected to the invitation, claiming that El-Rufai lacked the political conviction and dedication to national advancement required to issue such a summons.

“Honestly, without disrespect, how does he expect us in PDP to follow him to another party? The PDP is the party that made him who he is,” Lamido stated in an interview with BBC.

Lamido added, “How can a grandson claim that his grandfather knows nothing?”

When El-Rufai was governor, he and his supporters were the true power brokers, Lamido recalled, dismissing the significance of political elders in Nigeria.

“But now, he says he advised Buhari on his next steps. If he truly believes Buhari’s instructions are irrelevant, why did he seek his approval before leaving APC?” Lamido remarked.

Lamido denied rumors that the PDP is done and reaffirmed his dedication to the party.

“No matter the challenges within PDP, this is the party that shaped Nigerian democracy. If El-Rufai was ever a minister, it was under PDP. Everything he has today, PDP made it possible,” he stated.

He made it clear that if he had ever thought about leaving the PDP, he would have done so when the APC was established in 2014, but he decided to stay.

“They left PDP in anger, claiming it had failed. Now APC has failed them, so what next?” Lamido questioned.

Speaking to the larger political scene, Lamido advised against basing decisions about leadership on feelings.

“Leadership is not driven by anger, frustration, or personal ambition. It requires patience, foresight, and a commitment to the peace and well-being of the nation,” he said.

Lamido cautioned against resistance motivated by personal grievances in relation to attempts to oust President Bola Tinubu.

“If the goal is to remove Tinubu, it should not be out of anger. You don’t fight a leader simply because he upset you or for revenge.“

“Governance should be about national interest, not personal emotions,” he declared.

He advised Nigerian leaders to put the nation’s advancement ahead of their own personal conflicts.

“Nigeria’s image in the world is at stake. Our governance must respect human rights and ensure peace. What we need is reform, not emotional reactions,” Lamido concluded.
