Foundation awards record-breaking grant to support local community

Butte, Montana, is set to receive a significant boost with the announcement of a $15 million grant from the Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation. The three-year grant will support the construction of the Butte CommUNITY Hub, a multipurpose community center.

The funding will enhance the planned features and amenities at the hub, including additional fitness options, outdoor facilities, an indoor park, and spaces for community engagement, childcare, and workforce development. The project, which is expected to be completed in the spring of 2028, was announced in January following the receipt of a $20 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Butte-Silver Bow County Chief Executive J.P. Gallager expressed his gratitude to the Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation, saying, “I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation for their generous grant of $15 million towards the construction of the Butte CommUNITY Hub. This funding represents a monumental step forward in creating a vibrant gathering space for our community.”

The foundation has also offered additional funding through a $2.5 million community matching gift challenge, providing an opportunity for the community to come together and support the project. The Butte CommUNITY Hub is set to become a central gathering point for the community, offering a range of amenities and services that will enhance the quality of life for residents.
