The Innocent Chukwuemeka Chukwuma Empowerment Foundation (ICCEF) recently hosted it’s second celebrity book reading session, bringing together students from Blooming Lights College and Maranatha College at its library in Lagos State. The event featured Chioma Omeruah, popularly known as Chigul, who led the reading session with enthusiasm and passion.

Chigul read from the anthology “African Creations: A Decade of Okike Short Stories,” specifically highlighting Chinua Achebe’s story “Civil Peace.” This sparked engaging discussions with the students about civil war, the life of Jonathan Iwegbu, and the concept of “ex-gratia.” The session aimed to revive the reading culture among Nigerian youth, dominated by social media and technology.

Chigul emphasized the impact of reading on personal growth, stating, “Reading exposes you to many things. It allows you to dream, and think bigger. You get to travel in your mind, which should build the ideas for a better life.” The students showed significant interest in reading, evident from their thoughtful answers to questions, which warmed Chigul’s heart.

Ayo Olanrewaju, the foundation’s Program Manager, highlighted ICCEF’s goal to build and maintain the reading culture among Nigerian youth. The ICCEF’s youth empowerment legacy project focuses on empowering young people through education and literary activities. By providing access to quality literature and promoting reading habits, the foundation aims to equip youth with the knowledge and skills necessary for personal growth and development
