Nature’s Classroom: Kids Learning Through Play
The University of Mississippi (UMiss) in Oxford has announced a significant three-year grant of $2.6 million from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The grant will support programs that provide essential counseling services to youth across the state and expand access to evidence-based preschool curriculum for teachers.
The UMiss School of Education’s Clinic for Outreach and Personal Enrichment (COPE) will receive $1.5 million to expand its efforts in filling gaps in available counseling services. This support will cater to students from preschool to high school, as well as teachers and staff.
Additionally, the school’s Growing Healthy Minds, Bodies, and Communities initiative will receive $1.1 million. This funding will help increase access to its interactive curriculum for preschool teachers, students, and students’ families. The program offers a holistic approach to education, physical, and mental well-being.
According to Richard Balkin, chair of the School of Education’s department of leadership and counselor education, “Our goal is to expand these services because barriers to the traditional model for in-person counseling exist for many reasons—because of location, disabilities, transportation, or insurance.”
Balkin emphasized that COPE’s services aim to reach a broader audience, stating, “COPE’s services are not just for north Mississippi; we’re reaching out into areas that have been disenfranchised.
