Four dies as Russian drone strikes apartment block in Ukraine

At least four people were killed and up to nine others, including a toddler, were injured after a Russian drone crashed into a multi-story apartment building in the city of Sumy in northeastern Ukraine early on Thursday.

Using the Telegram chat app, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called the attack a horrific Russian crime and a horrible tragedy.

Russia launched 81 drones at Ukraine overnight, causing damage to homes and businesses throughout the country, according to the Ukrainian military.

According to the military, 39 drones failed to reach their targets, while 37 were shot down by the air force.

But it didn’t say what happened to the five drones that were left.

Emergency personnel were removing residents from various areas of the building, according to Sumy Governor Volodymyr Artyukh, who was seen in a video posted on Telegram in front of a crane and heaps of debris.

According to authorities, the attack damaged more than 20 automobiles and destroyed five apartments.

Emergency services posted images of rescuers searching through the debris as work on the scene continued into Thursday morning.

The area has been frequently targeted by Russian drones and borders Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukraine launched an incursion in August 2024.

The governor claims that the nocturnal attack on Odesa’s southern district also caused damage to two private homes, a hospital, and a grain storage without resulting in any injuries.

Thousands of people have been killed and injured since Moscow’s troops invaded Ukraine in February 2022, despite Russia’s denials that it intentionally targeted civilians.
