The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPC Limited) Foundation has launched a nationwide initiative to provide free cataract screening and extraction surgeries to 1,000 Nigerians.

At the launch of the program in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the Managing Director of NNPC Limited Foundation, Mrs. Emmanella Arukwe, said the initiative is part of the foundation’s efforts to improve healthcare outcomes and reduce inequalities in Nigeria.

Arukwe stated that the program is aimed at addressing the widespread issue of vision impairment caused by cataracts, which has severely impacted many Nigerians.

According to her, the program has already commenced in the Southwest and will expand to other geopolitical zones across the country in the coming months.

Lead Consultant Physician to the foundation, Dr. Anne Amugo, disclosed that over 600 people have already been screened in Ogun, while more than 100 have also been screened for cataract surgeries in Lagos State.

Amugo noted that the foundation has already conducted 100 successful surgeries since the exercise began, including three children born with blindness who have had their sight restored.

The NNPC Foundation has also organised free cancer screenings and counselling sessions for approximately 3,440 people across the six geopolitical zones.

The foundation’s Managing Director urged Nigerians to take advantage of the free cataract surgery initiative, which is part of the foundation’s commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians.
