Dr. Maxwell Kolawole, Director of West and Central Africa Programmes at the Malaria Consortium, revealed that over one million children in Plateau received free seasonal malaria chemoprevention drugs in 2024. This was made known during the 2025 Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention State Level Kickoff and Planning Meeting in Jos, where Kolawole was represented by Dr. Mashor Mbwas, Project Manager for Malaria Consortium in Plateau.

According to Kolawole, “the essence of this meeting is to build on the successes recorded in 2024 and formulate strategies to tackle the challenges encountered.” He highlighted that children aged three months to 59 months in over 10,000 communities across 17 local government areas received prophylaxis, leading to a significant reduction in malaria burden in the state.

Recent data shows that Plateau’s malaria prevalence rate has decreased to 15% from 23% in 2018. Mr. Ndak Zuhumnan, Programme Manager of the Plateau Malaria Elimination Programme, emphasised that the administered prophylaxis was aimed at boosting immunity and preventing malaria in children under five years old.

Zuhumnan stated, “The intervention is part of the state government’s efforts to eradicate malaria by 2030.” In 2024, 12,000 ad hoc staff were trained to administer the prophylaxis in 10,988 communities, including hard-to-reach areas. The meeting aimed to analyse the progress made in 2024 and identify strategies to overcome challenges.
