The African Nature Investors (ANI) Foundation, in partnership with the Australian High Commission, has successfully brought electricity to the remote community of Mayo-Selbe in Taraba State, Nigeria. This transformative off-grid solar electrification project has lit up the lives of over 63 households, marking a new chapter in the community’s history.
Residents celebrated with jubilation, dancing, and drumming in the streets. “Since I was born, I have never seen light in this community,” said Richard Okorie Emmanuel. “But today, it feels like the sun has come down to live with us.” Absatu Ladan highlighted the potential economic impact, stating, “We can now power our shops, our children can study at night, and the health centre will operate better. This is more than electricity. It’s opportunity.
The project was made possible through the Direct Aid Program of the Australian High Commission and delivered in collaboration with Australian company Okra Solar and local implementing partner Creeds. Yerima Thomas Maiyanga, the community monarch, praised the initiative as a “beacon of partnership” and pledged continued support for conservation efforts around the Gashaka Gumti National Park.
Dr. O.C. Oladipo, representing the Conservator-General of the National Park Service, described the electrification as a significant step toward community empowerment. Leilani Bin-Juda, Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, stated, “This project is a testament to the power of partnerships. It’s inspiring to see how collaboration has brought clean, green solar energy to Mayo-Selbe. This is about tangible change, and it’s only the beginning.”
The project has not only brought electricity to Mayo-Selbe but also represents a commitment to environmentally responsible development. As the sun set on Mayo-Selbe, it did so over a community forever transformed by unity, innovation, and shared purpose
