FUTO Students protest over bad road conditions on campus.

The Students’ Union Government of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), has appealed to federal and state authorities to repair the dilapidated access roads leading to the university. The students claim that the poor road conditions have crippled academic life, exposed them to insecurity, and increased economic hardship.

“The very roads meant to connect us to education have become a perilous nightmare, endangering academic pursuits, crippling our finances, and escalating the threat of insecurity,” the union stated.

The union specifically highlighted the Obinze-FUTO front gate road and the Ihiagwa-FUTO back gate road as the worst hit, describing them as “vital lifelines” now reduced to dangerous, impassable paths.

SUG President Blessed Ogbonna lamented that the roads have been impassable for over four months, causing financial strangulation for students. “Our transportation costs have skyrocketed, draining our pockets and crushing our spirits!” he said.

The union also raised concerns about the economic toll on students and transport operators, as well as the impact on the university’s public image. “These damaged access roads are not only demarketing the university’s public image but have proved to be a deep thorn in the flesh for students and staff,” SUG Public Relations Officer Paul Alajemba said.

The students also criticised delays in implementing the Special Palliative Relief on University Transportation initiative, which aims to ease mobility on campuses through Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles. Despite receiving CNG tricycles, the union said they remain unusable due to the incomplete construction of the required CNG filling station.

The university’s Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Chikwendu Emenike Orji, confirmed awareness of the road crisis, stating that the Imo State Government is attending to the problem, albeit at a slow pace.

The students further expressed concerns about off-campus insecurity, linking it to the poor road conditions, which they claim provide perfect cover for criminals to target student lodges.
