Ganduje anticipates more defections as Oborevwori joins APC as 22nd governor

Abdullahi Ganduje, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has voiced hope that additional governors from opposition parties will follow suit and join the ruling party.

This claim was made by Ganduje on Monday, April 28, during an event in Asaba, Delta State, to formally welcome former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori into the APC.

According to ZINGTIE, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost its hold on Delta State after almost 26 years when Oborevwori and Okowa recently defected to the APC.

Additionally, their defection gave the ruling party control over the state’s political system.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ganduje commended the other APC governors for their support, emphasizing that the APC now has 22 current governors following Oborevwori’s defection.

“I must thank our 21 executive governors. Now, with this, we have the 22nd governor. Let me tell you, keep your ears and eyes open — more governors will soon join us,” Ganduje stated while handing over the APC flag to Oborevwori.

Former Governor Okowa clarified the rationale behind their decision, stating that it was motivated by the necessity of strengthening ties between Delta State and the federal government in Abuja.

“When the news broke that we had decided to switch paths, many wondered why. But in every people’s history, there comes a time to make a strategic move for the common good. It wasn’t about me or the governor, but about ensuring Delta State has stronger access to the resources and goodwill available at the federal level,” Okowa explained.

Okowa bemoaned that Delta State missed out on numerous possibilities under his administration because it was against the federal government, calling the defection both “patriotic and strategic.”

Several APC leaders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who traveled to Asaba specifically for the event, attended.
