Mirjana Spoljaric, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has described the situation in Gaza as “hell on earth.”
Her remarks come alongside concerns raised by the United Nations human rights office, which warned that Israel’s ongoing military operations may make it impossible for Palestinians to continue living in Gaza.
As the official guardian of the Geneva Conventions international laws governing the conduct of war the ICRC typically steps in to express concern when it believes serious violations are occurring.
Spoljaric stated that what’s unfolding in Gaza represents an “extreme hollowing out” of international legal norms.
Since fighting resumed on March 18, Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of 1,542 people.
In addition, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have ordered mass evacuations, displacing nearly 400,000 individuals. A total blockade on the delivery of food, medical supplies, and other essential goods has been in place since March 2.
“No state, no party to a conflict… can be exempt from the obligation not to commit war crimes, not to commit genocide, not to commit ethnic cleansing,” Spoljaric said.
“These rules apply. They are universal.”
