German Election: Trump, Netanyahu, NATO react as Merz coast to victory

As Friedrich Merz and the center-right Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union (CSU) alliance glide to victory in the German election held on Sunday, congratulations and responses have started to pour in.

The CDU/CSU alliance is leading other parties with 208 seats, while the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is lagging behind with 151 seats, according to the election results from Sunday.

With 120 seats, Olaf Scholz’s SPD, the current chancellor, is in third place.

Merz has shown strong support for Europe and Ukraine’s defense in the lead-up to the election.

Donald Trump, the president of the United States of America, praised the election as a “great day for Germany” people in response to the polling findings thus far.

“Much like the USA, the people of Germany got tired of the no common sense agenda, especially on energy and immigration,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social, adding: “This is a great day for Germany.”

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli minister, also complimented Merz and said he is excited to collaborate with him.

“Looking forward to working closely with your upcoming government to further strengthen the partnership between our two countries,” Netanyahu wrote on X.

Merz was hailed by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on the expected CDU/CSU victory.

“It’s vital that Europe step up on defence spending, and your leadership will be key,” he said on X.

Elon Musk, a former US tech billionaire and adviser to President Trump, has urged Germans to support the AfD.
