Haruna Dederi, Kano State’s attorney general, has directed that all criminal charges against the state’s #EndBadGovernance demonstrators be dropped.
On January 27, 2025, the Director of Public Prosecution made the announcement in response to a petition filed on November 5, 2024, by Citizens’ Gavel, a civic-tech non-profit. The organization had urged the Attorney General to drop the charges by using his constitutional authority under Section 211(1)(c) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The demonstrators, who took part in protests around the country from August 1 to August 10, 2024, were accused with treason conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and public disruption.
In order to contest the charges, Citizens’ Gavel submitted applications for fundamental rights enforcement and offered legal assistance to the demonstrators.
Citizens’ Gavel Communications Associate Rachael Adio called the ruling a win for Nigerian civil liberties.
“This marks a pivotal moment in the fight for justice. It reaffirms the constitutional right of Nigerians to peacefully express their grievances without fear of persecution,” Adio said in a statement on Tuesday.
She said that Citizens’ Gavel is still dedicated to promoting justice and guaranteeing accountability in the legal system, and she praised the Attorney General for preserving the rule of law and protecting citizens’ rights.
