Emmanuel Shior, the former Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has challenged Governor Hyacinth Alia’s recent remarks claiming there was no existing data on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) when his government took office.

In a press release shared with reporters in Makurdi, Dr. Shior voiced his concerns over the governor’s statement and questioned whether the current administration also lacks records of the Cameroonian refugees residing in the state.

He stressed that having precise data is essential to effectively respond to the worsening humanitarian situation caused by increasing insecurity, which continues to drive up the number of displaced individuals.

“Governor Alia’s claim is a misrepresentation of the facts. In my handover notes, I documented data indicating approximately two million IDPs and around ten thousand Cameroonian refugees in Benue State,” Dr. Shior stated.

Dr. Shior, who is also a faculty member at the Federal University of Lafia, highlighted that the previous government worked to establish key partnerships and organized forums focused on gathering dependable data to better manage the IDP crisis.

These joint efforts, he explained, included collaborations with both local and international bodies such as NEMA, UNHCR, and UNICEF, and led to the development of the Benue State Humanitarian Response Plan.

He also pointed out that Governor Alia had previously referenced the same data during media appearances and discussions with aid organizations, questioning the sudden shift in the governor’s stance.

“What is particularly ironic is that while the governor claims to have improved conditions for IDPs, new camps are being established without adequate provisions for their welfare,” he said.
