Governors from Nigeria’s Northwest region recently met with senior officials from the United Nations and representatives of the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Abuja to discuss development strategies aimed at enhancing social services and fostering economic growth in the area.

After the meeting, the Chairman of the Northwest Governors’ Forum and Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Umaru Radda, shared that the discussions focused on significant interventions in areas like social protection, education, food security, and climate adaptation.

Governors Uba Sani (Kaduna), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto), and Umar Namadi (Jigawa) also participated in the talks.

The forum received updates from UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and UN Resident Coordinator Malick Fall on the progress of various initiatives and explored ways to enhance regional cooperation.

Governor Radda revealed that the meeting with the AfDB centered on the Nigeria Agricultural Growth Scheme (NAG 2.0), aimed at advancing agricultural development and strengthening value chains in the Northwestern states. “We are on the verge of launching this programme, which will promote agricultural development and improve value chains in the region,” he explained.

The governors also discussed the second phase of the Special Agro-Processing Zones (SAPZ) initiative, which will now cover all five Northwest states, expanding from its initial focus on Kaduna and Kano states.

Further discussions touched on renewable energy solutions under the Infrastructure Resilience Support (IRS) programme, particularly solar and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) projects.

The forum also expressed interest in accessing funding from the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to enhance the education sector in the region.

Governor Radda mentioned that each state governor has appointed a coordinator to oversee development partner programmes, ensuring a unified approach to addressing key issues such as poverty reduction, youth employment, and the challenge of out-of-school children.

“We have agreed to collaborate on economic growth, agriculture, tackling the out-of-school children issue, poverty reduction, and youth employment,” he affirmed.
