A Virginia grandmother, Carrie Edwards, has turned her $150,000 Virginia Lottery Powerball prize into a gift for others, donating the entire winnings to three charities dear to her heart.

Edwards, who won the draw on September 8, recalled the moment she discovered her fortune. “I’m sitting in a meeting, and I look at my phone, it says, ‘Please collect your lottery winnings.’ So I go home and log into my account, and it says, you won the Monday, September 8 draw for $50,000 and you had the 3x multiplier, and so you won $150,000,” she said.

Despite her joy, Edwards knew right away how she would use the money. “As soon as that divine windfall happened and came down upon my shoulders, I knew exactly what I needed to do with it and I knew I needed to give it all away,” she explained

She divided the funds equally among three causes: the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, which supports families impacted by early-onset dementia — a disease that claimed her husband’s life last year; Shalom Farms, a Richmond nonprofit working toward a fairer food system where she also volunteers; and the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, reflecting her roots in a Navy family.

Charity representatives praised Edwards for her generosity. One said, “She does so much for us already that I just couldn’t believe it when she said I was just so excited.” Another added, “When there’s only less than 20 people working at your org, this kind of gift is huge. It means more fresh fruits and vegetables in more shoppers’ bags across the city.”

Hoping her actions inspire others, Edwards shared, “I want this to be an example of how other people, when they’re blessed, can bless other people.
