The United States’ shift in policy towards Ukraine should serve as a wake-up call for Europe, according to Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who spoke on Wednesday.

Mitsotakis cautioned European leaders against losing momentum on geopolitical and economic matters, pointing out that this had been the case in recent times.

The Greek Prime Minister’s remarks came after President Donald Trump’s sharp criticism of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s handling of the war with Russia.

During comments at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, Trump questioned how the funds provided to Ukraine by the United States and NATO were being used.

Trump pointed out that the U.S. had contributed more than $300 billion in aid, while Europe’s transnational military alliance had only spent about a third of that amount.

Speaking at a business event in Thessaloniki, Mitsotakis urged Europe to “wake up from the geopolitical and economic stagnation into which it has unfortunately fallen for some time.”

The Prime Minister added that the “different perspective from the United States” now forces nations in the region to confront reality, act swiftly, and implement decisions on ongoing discussions.

Since returning to office, Trump has repeatedly stressed that Europe must increase its financial contributions, noting that they have more at stake in the Russia-Ukraine conflict than the U.S.

Although the U.S. has taken steps to end the three-year-long war, with special envoy Keith Kellogg leading the discussions, the president has openly expressed his intention to withdraw financial support for Ukraine.
