After the All Progressives Congress (APC), a group affiliated with Edo North Conscience (ENC), achieved majority status in the Edo State House of Assembly, they demanded that Hon. Blessing Agbebaku be removed from his position as Speaker of the House.

According to ZINGTIE, the group issued the request in a statement within twenty-four hours after the APC state chapter leadership informed Speaker Hon. Blessing Agbebaku and the House that the party’s lawmakers now hold a majority in the Assembly.

Following a stakeholders’ meeting, the statement was signed by Mr. Oshioke Aledeh, the group’s chairman, and Mr. Tunde Balogun, its secretary, and provided to reporters in Benin City.

It said that four opposition members of the House defected to the state’s ruling APC, necessitating the call.

“As it stands now, APC is the majority in the House with 13 members, while PDP has 11. This gives APC an edge over other parties regarding the principal officers of the House.

“Last week, three PDP lawmakers and one Labour Party lawmaker defected to the APC. The defected lawmakers are Donald Okogbe (PDP, Akoko-Edo II), Sunday Ojiezele (PDP, Esan South-East Constituency), Richard Edosa (LP, Oredo West), and Bright Iyamu (PDP, Orhionmwon II).

“So, based on this, the APC should take the position of Speaker and other principal offices in the House. They should commence the process of removing Hon. Agbebaku to pave the way for an APC Speaker in the House,” the statement read.

Despite being a member of a minority party, the group believed that Blessing Agbebaku’s extended hold on the speakership was not beneficial to the House or the state.

However, it said that “despite pretending to be at home with Governor Monday Okpebholo, his loyalty is still with the PDP” and promised to start an impeachment process that would eventually result in Hon. Agbebaku’s dismissal as Speaker.

ZINGTIE remembers that the state APC leadership informed Speaker Hon. Blessing Agbebaku of the party’s majority status in the Assembly in a letter sent on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

After the four opposition members defected, Agbebaku, who read the APC letter, affirmed that the party now holds a majority in the Assembly.
