Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised that his country will hold Hamas accountable for failing to return the body of hostage Shiri Bibas as agreed upon.

Netanyahu made this statement on Friday through a video message.

“We will act with determination to bring Shiri home along with all our hostages – both living and dead – and ensure Hamas pays the full price for this cruel and evil violation of the agreement,” he said.

This announcement followed a report from Israeli experts who revealed that one of the four bodies given to Israel by Hamas on Thursday was that of an unidentified woman, not Shiri Bibas. The bodies of her two sons, Kfir and Ariel, had been returned and identified.

The prime minister condemned Hamas for what he described as an outrageously cynical act, replacing Shiri Bibas’s body with that of a Gaza woman, rather than the mother who had been abducted alongside her sons and husband, Yarden, during the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

So far, Hamas has not publicly responded to the allegations.

The accusation may pose a risk to the fragile ceasefire deal brokered with US support and the mediation of Qatar and Egypt last month.

It remains uncertain whether this development will delay or obstruct the release of six living hostages set to be freed on Saturday, or whether it will interfere with the upcoming negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire.
