Heavy protest hits Nasarawa community over killing of 35-year-old fisherwoman

Following the alleged murder of Kpadoo Lazarus-Uwua, a 35-year-old Tiv woman, by a suspected young herder, residents of the Imon village in the Adudu Chiefdom of Obi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, have taken to the streets in protest.

Sources claim that on March 26, 2025, Lazarus-Uwua was attacked while fishing in a nearby stream.

She was killed at the site when the suspect, a child, allegedly accused her of contaminating the water and fatally hacked her with a machete.

Tension in the community has increased since the incident.

Nonetheless, locals, especially Tiv natives, have remained composed and urged authorities to carry out an exhaustive and unbiased investigation.

The deceased’s family has expressed astonishment and sorrow.

A relative named Mathew Aondo told reporters, “Kpadoo was a mother of three with dreams of building a better life for her children.”

“Her life was taken over something as trivial as fishing. We are not violent people. All we want is peace—to go to our farms and come back safely.”

Residents and community leaders have denounced the attack and called on the state administration to resolve the persistent tensions between farmers and herders, which have resulted in recurrent acts of violence in the region.

Imon youth leader Samuel Ortserga voiced alarm about the regularity of these assaults.

“It’s painful that we keep losing our people. Our wives, brothers, and parents are being killed without provocation. We commend the police for arresting the suspect, but the government must act quickly to stop this violence.” Ortserga stated.

Local Fulani leaders have also responded to the tragedy. Adudu Chiefdom youth leader Saleh Anaruwa called the killing “needless” and commended the Imon youth for not taking revenge.

“We mourn with the community and promise to support the investigation,” he said.

The District Head of Adudu, Alhaji Abdullahi Tanko, also condemned the act and appealed for unity.

“Violence helps no one. We must work together to ensure peace in our communities,” he said.

Isaiah Audu, the president of the Tiv Youth Organization in Nasarawa State, also praised the prompt action taken by security personnel and the Tiv and Fulani youth organizations to secure the suspect’s detention.
