With his recent remarks on X (previously Twitter) about Palestinian identity and history, Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of a prominent Hamas commander who later became a vocal critic of the organization, has stirred controversy.
Yousef contended in his post that the name “Palestinian” refers to a “violent political movement” composed of more than a dozen militias that, in his words, “fundamentally disagree with each other” rather than an ethnic group. He further claimed that the name “Palestine” itself was a colonial invention of Great Britain during the British Mandate of Palestine, which lasted from 1920 to 1948, rather than an indigenous one.
“The notion that Palestine was a country or a sovereign state that has been occupied is a pure lie,” Yousef wrote.
He asserted that most people who identify as Palestinians are actually “economic migrants from other regions,” and that by portraying themselves as native to the territory, they deceive the international community.
“The Palestinian identity was essentially created during the British Mandate and ended with its dissolution in 1948,” Yousef continued. According to him, the Palestinian people today are ignorant of their actual ancestry.
Online responses to this statement have been conflicting. His message was extensively circulated by Israeli supporters, who saw it as confirming their stance on the Israeli-Palestinian issue. His comments, however, have been denounced by Palestinians and pro-Palestinian activists as untrue, disrespectful of their lived history, and an effort to obliterate their identity and justifiable ambitions.
