An official report from the National Youth Service Corps regarding the assault case involving a corps member in Anambra State has been certified by Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra State.
In an interview with Arise News, Soludo revealed that although the letter was dated Tuesday, it arrived at his office on Wednesday. The letter was sent by the NYSC State Director. He claimed that in addition to summarizing the event, the communication also represented the victim’s family’s viewpoint.
“I just received a letter today dated yesterday from the NYSC Director in the State giving me a summary of what had happened and so on and so forth, now indicating that the family wants the matter to go forward and that’s welcomed,” the governor said.
Youth organizations and civil rights campaigners are outraged by the incident, which purportedly involved Abiola being assaulted by Agunechemba security group members. Numerous people have asked for more protections for state-serving corps members and demanded justice.
Soludo praised Agunechemba for their dedication to combating crime in challenging environments, but he maintained that wrongdoing must be ignored. He emphasized that while his administration supports the group’s overarching security role, it will not be afraid to call out excesses.
He also vowed that corps members’ safety would not be jeopardized and that they would continue to play a crucial role in community development. “We value the contributions of NYSC in community development. What happened is unfortunate, and the processes to get justice are already underway,” Soludo emphasized.
The governor went on to say that in order to guarantee due process and accountability, the state government will collaborate closely with the NYSC and Abiola’s family.
