During the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, Senator Chris Ngige served as the Minister of Labor and Employment. He has disclosed his connection to the Okija temple. The senator said that just a few days prior to his election, he was compelled to take an oath of allegiance at the Okija temple against his will.
In an article published on Saturday, August 9, 2025, Vanguard News quoted Senator Chris Ngige as saying, “I was taken to Okija shrine by force.” By midnight, I didn’t know where we were going, and it was a few days to my election. So they said we must go there to swear an oath of loyalty.”
Ngige explained his involvement by saying he brought his Bible and holy water even though he had no idea where they were headed. The senator stated that he is aware that God is superior to all shrines and minor deities.
When they arrived at the shrine, one of the people there decided to take an oath on his behalf, Senator Chris Ngige recalled. However, Ngige claimed that after taking office as governor and learning of the fraudulent activities of the shrine from security reports, former President Olusegun Obasanjo ordered the shrine’s dismantling and allegedly gave the Inspector General of Police instructions to order the Commissioner of Police to take appropriate action.
