The announcement of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate as the victor of Saturday’s Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election has been criticized by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State for alleged widespread irregularities.
Its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, signed the statement, which was given to reporters in Ibadan on Monday.
On Sunday, the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, announced that the PDP’s Folajimi Oyekunle had won the election.
The APC’s Adewale Olatunji came in second.
In Oyo State, the APC reaffirmed the party’s dedication to participatory democracy and the value of free, fair, and credible elections.
“Regrettably, established cases of irregularities which characterised the by-election brought back the ugly memory of Obasanjo’s era when elections were dubbed do-or-die affairs by the PDP,” it said.
The party said that although certain INEC officers allegedly permitted voters without PVCs to cast ballots in multiple wards, some PDP leaders disbursed large sums of money for vote-buying across polling places.
“Handlers of the Park Management System (PMS) allegedly mobilised and equipped hundreds of members to intimidate residents and compromise the poll.
“Some of these people allegedly unleashed terror across Yemetu, Bodija, Sango and Agbowo,” APC alleged.
The party stated that it was gathering information on the discrepancies and will soon provide a final verdict.
Members were advised by the Oyo APC to maintain composure and trust in the party’s leadership at all levels.
