Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari passed away in a London hospital on Sunday, prompting a scathing criticism from renowned human rights attorney and former National Human Rights Commission Chairman Prof. Chidi Anselm Odinkalu.

Odinkalu took advantage of the opportunity to send a strong message to the current Nigerian administration, warning them to make investments in domestic healthcare facilities or risk a similar outcome.

Odinkalu tweeted the following in a tweet that was published on X (previously Twitter):

“#Nigeria’s current rulers may need to be reminded: Those who die in foreign hospitals only get to return to the country as cargo. They don’t pass through @immigrationng. Rather we clear them through @CustomsNG as import. If you don’t want this, build a hospital that can work for you.”

Odinkalu’s statement highlight a persistent and well-known issue in Nigeria: the insufficient healthcare system, which forces many of its elite to seek care elsewhere. Buhari’s passing in a foreign hospital has rekindled calls from the public for immediate changes and more funding for Nigerian hospitals in order to deliver high-quality, dignified healthcare domestically.

The letter has symbolic meaning and strikes a deep chord amid the general dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s healthcare system, underscoring the painful fact that even the country’s most well-known individuals are not immune to this situation.

Odinkalu’s warning is a strong reminder to Nigerian leaders to give the creation of a healthcare system that can accommodate the requirements of all residents top priority.
