Igbinedion University Okada, Nigeria’s premier private university, has secured a prestigious European Union grant for Sustainable Plastic Waste and Recycling Management (SWARM) capacity building. The grant, worth €800,000 (approximately N1.3 billion), is part of the ERASMUS-EDU-2024-CBHE program.

According to Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, Vice Chancellor of Igbinedion University, “The project is well aligned with the university’s drive and disposition to sustainable and impact-driven collaboration with international organisations to help manage the menace of plastic waste in Nigeria.”

The three-year SWARM project aims to revolutionise sustainable plastic waste management and recycling practices within higher education institutions in South Africa and Nigeria. The initiative will promote inter-regional and institutional collaboration, equipping staff and students with innovative skills and sustainable technologies.

As Ezemonye noted, this project will enhance solid waste management training, foster recycling and resource recovery, and facilitate technology transfer through international collaboration. “We are committed to creating a replicable model for environmental stewardship, contributing significantly to the global sustainability agenda,” he added.

The SWARM consortium comprises three South African and three Nigerian higher education institutions, along with European partners. This collaborative effort is expected to make a significant impact on sustainable plastic waste management in Nigeria and beyond. The project’s outcomes will also contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 12, which focuses on responsible consumption and production patterns.
