Nneka Chimezie, the National President of the Igbo Women Assembly (IWA), has urged former Nigerian leader, General Yakubu Gowon, to break his silence regarding the 1966 military coup.

She believes that doing so would align with General Ibrahim Babangida’s earlier remarks, which clarified that the coup was not orchestrated by the Igbo.

Speaking in relation to the May 30 sit-at-home observed in parts of the South East, Chimezie defended the commemoration of Biafra Heroes Day. She described it as a solemn tribute to those who lost their lives during the civil war.

Chimezie pointed out that the persistent marginalization of the Igbo people has been a major factor fueling the renewed call for Biafra among the youth. She encouraged the Federal Government to opt for peaceful engagement with the agitators instead of using military tactics.

She further stated that Babangida’s admission should have prompted a formal apology to the Igbo community from the government.

“We have done a lot of research and discovered that the civil war was avoidable. The false narration that the 1966 coup was an Igbo coup, as recently confirmed by Gen. Babangida, has not been addressed,” she said.

The group also reiterated its demand for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB, as a necessary step toward justice and healing.

According to IWA, setting Kanu free would help de-escalate tensions and contribute to restoring calm in the South East, rather than worsening the situation.

They also emphasized the importance of unity among the Igbo people, while warning political leaders in the region against prioritizing personal ambitions over the collective interests of their ethnic group.
