IGP suspends controversial e-CMR enforcement scheduled for July 29

The intention to start enforcing the e-Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) on July 29 has been immediately suspended by Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun.

This was said in a statement made on Monday in Abuja by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer.

According to Adejobi, the suspension was implemented to provide adequate opportunity for public education and enlightenment regarding the workings, advantages, and efficacy of e-CMR.

According to the police spokesman, police personnel have been advised by the I-G not to request e-CMR certificates.

He said that police will be disciplined if they were discovered to be extorting or abusing the public under the pretence of not having e-CMR certificates.

Adejobi stated that starting on a date to be disclosed later, only committed officers would carry out the enforcement.

According to him, the e-CMR was created to protect both private and corporate vehicle ownership and to solve the problems associated with vehicle-related crimes.

According to Adejobi, the registration will aid in compiling the information that car owners have entered into the system and in handling the action of reporting stolen vehicles.

“The e-CMR will provide a firsthand database to the Force for curbing vehicular crimes as dedicated officers can access real-time comprehensive data of every vehicle on their tablets.

“The e-CMR will prevent multiple registration of vehicles and serve as a database to collate biometric and other data of vehicle owners and individuals.

“It will also, add value to the national database and incident report portal generated from other Ministries, Departments and Agencies towards general security,” he said.

He claims that the Nigeria Police wants to make it clear that the e-CMR is not a platform for making money, despite rumours and stories circulating about it.

According to him, the platform is an attempt to digitalize law enforcement for efficiency and the overall safety of Nigerian citizens’ lives and property.

To get into the e-CMR system, the police spokesman asked for everyone’s understanding and help, including well-meaning Nigerians and residents.

According to ZINGTIE, the IG issued a directive on July 29th to enforce the digitalized e-CMR.
