A civic advocacy group based in Imo State, known as The Mazi Organisation (TMO), has leveled strong accusations against Governor Hope Uzodinma’s government, alleging widespread mismanagement across the state.

The group, composed of concerned citizens from Imo, promotes transparency and effective leadership. They asserted that the state is currently experiencing a complete breakdown in governance.

Speaking at a media briefing in Owerri, representatives of the organisation claimed that the administration has resorted to threats, defamation, and fabricated allegations in an attempt to silence Dr. Chima Matthew Amadi a leading voice in the group and a well-known advocate for good governance for criticizing poor leadership practices.

Cajetan Duke, who serves as TMO’s public relations officer, described the allegations targeting Amadi as false narratives filled with absurd claims, including involvement in cults, money rituals, election fraud, and other baseless accusations. He stated these were desperate moves meant to distract from the real issue the lack of accountability in how local government funds are being handled.

He further said: “Let us be clear, although this attempt by the administration was an insult-ridden drivel, we will not under any guise be dragged into that show of shame with an inept administration, because we hold the Office of the Governor of Imo State in high esteem even though the current occupant does everything to demean and disrespect such a position of trust.”

According to Duke, the controversy largely stems from Amadi’s outspoken stance on the alleged misappropriation of funds intended for local councils.

TMO insisted that Amadi’s “only crime” was siding with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in advocating for the full disbursement of federal allocations to all 27 local government areas, as mandated by the Supreme Court.

Referencing data from the Federal Ministry of Finance, the group revealed that Imo’s local governments have received over N300 billion in federal funds since 2020. Yet, they claim, council offices remain dilapidated and not a single viable project has been executed in any LGA.

They posed a direct question: “Where has the money gone? Only Governor Hope Uzodinma can provide this answer.”

TMO also pointed to Amadi’s recent speech during the Catholic Men’s Organisation’s annual gathering at Maria Assumpta Cathedral in Owerri as the reason behind what they described as the government’s growing hostility toward him.

During that address, Amadi reportedly presented figures indicating that from 2020 to 2025, Imo’s 27 local councils had collectively received more than N330 billion in allocations — with Mbaitoli LGA receiving approximately N15.63 billion and Nkwerre, the least funded, getting around N10.75 billion.

“Yet across the state, schools, health centres, sports facilities and roads remain in scandalous decay. That truth, backed by data, is what has unsettled Governor Uzodinma,” TMO noted.

The group endorsed Amadi’s position “in totality” and insisted that “every kobo that has accrued to Imo State since 2020 must be accounted for.”

It pointed to the disappearance of FAAC allocations, ecological funds, and intervention funds from international partners such as the World Health Organization, USAID, and the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, WASH programme as “too monumental to be swept under the carpet.”

TMO questioned the administration’s motives in criminalising Amadi’s humanitarian efforts, such as assisting indigent families, asking: “What is the wrongdoing in assisting indigent families? Why is the Imo State government intimidated and desperate to criminalize humanitarian efforts, instead of commending the benefactor?”

TMO issued a “solemn demand” to the EFCC, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, Nigeria Police, and other agencies to investigate Uzodinma.

The group urged Amadi and other advocates to “remain unbowed” in leading the charge for accountability.
