To promote harmony and peace, Governor Babagana Zulum has helped farmers and Fulani herders in Gamboru Ngala town in the center of Borno State reach a truce.
Following weeks of hostilities and uncertainty, a peace meeting called by Governor Zulum on Monday resulted in the truce.
Zulum praised everyone for agreeing to the meeting but warned everyone to avoid any actions that would result in violence.
The state of Borno is home to rural settlements. The nomads we have are the Shuwas, the Kanuris, and the Fulanis. Our traditions and cultures are the same. As a result, I implore everyone in Borno to uphold the law and make sure they coexist peacefully,” Zulum said once more.
Additionally, the governor gave assurances that the state government is taking all essential steps to stop conflicts between Fulani herders and farmers in Borno.
Representatives from the farming community and the Fulani herders were present at the meeting, along with traditional and community leaders; Bukwr Talba, a member of the House of Representatives representing Borno Central, the chairman of the Local Government Council, and a member of the House of Assembly representing Ngala.
Additionally, Governor Zulum announced the formation of a commission to investigate the reasons behind the disputes between Borno State’s farmers and herders.
During a news conference on Monday in Gamboru town, the governor announced.
“Let me use this opportunity to announce a committee that will look into the farmers and herders conflicts in all 27 Local Government Areas of Borno State,” said Zulum.
The group will, among other things, identify underutilized grazing grounds and reestablish the abandoned livestock paths.
He underlined that the government will follow the committee’s recommendations to solve the underlying issues that give rise to disputes between farmers and herders.
The committee has officials from the Nigeria Police, DSS, all emirate councils, Miyetti Allah, the Alhaya Association, and the Governor’s Office. Tijjani Guzamala, Special Adviser designate, will chair the committee.
