The Iyara Zango livestock market has been closed by the Ijumu Local Government Council.
This was confirmed to ZINGTIE on Friday by the local government’s executive chairman, Alhaji Haruna Ibrahim.
The closure comes after intelligence revealed that the market has been used by kidnappers and other criminal elements to conduct their illicit activities.
It was learned that the thieves moved to Iyara, in the Ijumu Local Government Area, following the shutdown of Zango markets in various areas of the state, especially Kogi Central.
The market will stay closed till further notice, the council chairman said, as security forces have been called in to execute the directive.
“I have been mandated by the state governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, to eradicate criminal elements tarnishing the image of the local government and the state through kidnapping and banditry.
“The safety of the people of Ijumu and travellers remains our priority, and anyone or any group frustrating government efforts will face the full wrath of the law,” he said.
