Wayne State University in Detroit has received a historic $50 million gift from alumnus James A. Anderson and his wife, Patricia, in support of its College of Engineering. This donation, the largest in the university’s 157-year history, will focus on supporting faculty and students through various initiatives.

The gift will provide doctoral fellowships, enhance undergraduate student experiences, and establish a dean’s fund to support the college’s leadership in driving innovation and research. The university officials believe that this increased support will attract top faculty and Ph.D. students, driving research in key areas such as mobility, energy storage, and AI

James Anderson, president and CEO of Urban Science, expressed his confidence in the gift’s potential to create new opportunities for STEM careers and drive progress. “Since my time as a student, and later a faculty member, at Wayne State University, I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of a quality STEM education in transforming lives, economies, and communities,” he said.

“We’re confident this gift will continue to create new opportunities for high-paying STEM careers, foster innovation and drive progress in the Motor City and beyond, and we’re honoured to work alongside WSU’s esteemed leadership to bring it to fruition.”

In recognition of the gift, the College of Engineering will be named after the Andersons, solidifying their legacy in supporting education and innovation
