On Saturday, Iran stated that it is open to negotiations with the United States, but not under the “maximum pressure” strategy employed by former President Donald Trump.

In a statement shared on Telegram, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that the lifting of sanctions would require talks, but insisted that these discussions should not be framed within Trump’s maximum pressure approach, as it would not be a negotiation but rather a form of surrender.

This statement follows remarks from Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who advised the government against engaging in talks with Washington, calling such negotiations reckless.

Khamenei, who holds the final authority on all major strategic decisions in Iran, pointed to the country’s past negotiations with the U.S. as a reason for his stance.

In 2015, Iran reached a historic agreement with the United States, along with France, Germany, Britain, China, and Russia, to limit its nuclear program in exchange for the easing of international sanctions. However, in 2018, during his first term, Trump pulled the U.S. out of the deal and reinstated heavy sanctions on Tehran, despite opposition from European countries.

On Wednesday, Trump called for a new, verified nuclear peace agreement with Iran, reiterating that the country should not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, Iran continues to assert that its nuclear program is purely for peaceful purposes and denies any plans to build atomic weapons.

In response, Trump reinstated his maximum pressure policy on Tuesday, and on Thursday, the U.S. announced financial sanctions on individuals and entities accused of facilitating the shipment of hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of Iranian crude oil to China.
