Israel vows to respond to Iran’s strikes

Herzi Halevi, the chief of Israel’s armed forces, has vowed to take action in response to Iran’s unprecedented attack on the country despite widespread appeals for restraint.

Iran’s proxies around the region have intensified attacks against Israel and its allies during the six-month war in Gaza between Israel and the militant group Hamas, which Iran backs. They claim to be operating in support of the Palestinians there.

Before Iran launched its first-ever assault on Israeli territory on Saturday, tensions were already high. Iran had fired hundreds of missiles and drones in retaliation for a deadly April 1 strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

As per the Israeli army, the attack caused minimal damage, and the majority of the weapons were shot down with the assistance of the US and other allies.

Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened with his war cabinet late on Monday to decide the next actions, following warnings from Western nations against an escalation, including some that had supported Israel in its defence.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian informed his Chinese counterpart over the phone on Tuesday that Iran was “willing to exercise restraint” and had no intention of further raising tensions. Iran had previously stated it would consider the subject “concluded” unless Israel retaliated.
