As Israel deals with one of its worst security crises in decades, Israeli troops have harshly attacked Yair Netanyahu, the son of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, for staying in Miami, Florida. The outcry coincides with the mass mobilization of some 360,000 reservists who were called up to fight Hamas after the October 7 strikes.
The 32-year-old Yair, who has been in the United States since the beginning of this year, has angered military families and social media users by being accused of evading his national duty. The prime minister’s own son seems disconnected from the realities of war, according to critics, even if thousands of young Israelis disrupt their lives to report for reserve duty, many of them leaving behind families and careers.
“This is not just hypocrisy; it’s abandonment, our brothers and sisters are dying, and the leader’s son is sipping coffee in Miami.” said one reservist in a video circulating online.
Protesters contend that those who decide on war should bear some of the risks themselves, and the dispute has stoked broader resentment at Israel’s political elite. Yair, meanwhile, has mostly remained silent and has only made fleeting remarks on social media endorsing the Israeli military without explaining his absence.
The story highlights the growing dissatisfaction in Israeli society over shared sacrifice and accountability difficulties as the conflict rages on, tensions that may have long-term political repercussions for the Netanyahu family.
