Governor Malam Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has enacted two new laws aimed at shifting the state’s agriculture from subsistence-based practices to a more industrialized and modernized system.

The announcement was made through a statement issued by Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary.

According to the statement, the new laws are designed to revamp the agricultural and livestock sectors, fostering innovation, increased productivity, and sustainable economic development.

The first of the two laws is an Executive Order that officially creates the Ministry of Livestock Development — a move intended to unlock the vast potential within Jigawa’s livestock industry.

In addition, the Governor signed the Jigawa Agricultural Transformation Service (JATS) Law 2025, which establishes a dedicated agency tasked with driving the state’s agricultural industrialization strategy.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Governor Namadi emphasized that the newly established ministry and agency reflect his administration’s firm resolve to advance the agricultural sector, in alignment with his 12-point development agenda.

According to him, “the new ministry is quite an important ministry,” noting that “we have one of the largest livestock markets in Africa.”

“JATS was born out of our desire to transform agricultural properties. This agency is going to drive all of our agricultural transformation activities and will serve as a model, not only in Jigawa and northern Nigeria, but in Nigeria as a whole.”
