June 12: DSS issues strong warning over protests

June 12 is designated Democracy Day in Nigeria, and the Department of State Services, or DSS, has made it clear that it will not allow rallies from individuals or groups on that day.

The DSS issued a warning in a statement on Tuesday night to anyone organizing similar protests to refrain from using any kind of violence or disruption.

Afunanya, the Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, signed a statement on behalf of the agency asserting that it has information on plots to incite violence and disturb public order.

Part of the statement said: “These protests are designed with sinister objectives to coincide with the Democracy Day Celebration.

“While citizens may have the rights of assembly and expression, such freedoms should not be used to undermine public safety and national security. The determination by some non-state actors to incite mass disaffection through demonstrations that may turn violent will not be tolerated.”
