In the early hours of Thursday, military personnel and other security agencies took control of the busy Effurun and Ebrumede roundabouts in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, leading to the disappearance of human rights advocates who had planned to spearhead protests.

A visit to the area revealed no protesters were visible, as observed by a correspondent monitoring events in the town.

When asked to comment, human rights advocate Israel Joe remarked that June 12, recognized as Democracy Day, has yet to reflect the true voice of the people as expressed in the vote for M.K.O. Abiola.

He said the level of suffering, hunger and insecurity in the country is alarming. “We are witnessing the kind of suffering, hardship and hunger that has not been witnessed in Nigeria”

He said the town was militarized before the break of day, ”those who were supposed to lead the protest today were the same persons who allegedly kicked against the #Endbadgovernance# protest sometime ago.

He noted that the issue remains pending in court and mentioned that those who previously opposed the protests are now stepping down from their political roles.

“Most of them are resigning their appointment now. They have seen first hand suffering, hardship that has never been witnessed in Nigeria.”

Despite the current challenges, Comrade Joe expressed optimism that the Nigerian government will continue striving to ensure democracy goes beyond mere rhetoric and becomes a reality for all citizens.
