As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) continue to contest the Court of Appeal’s decision over local government elections, Osun State’s political crisis has gotten worse.

The APC has urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to recognize the reinstatement of its council chairmen and council members, accusing him of deceiving the public about the ruling.

According to the party, the Attorney-General of the Federation attested to the reinstalled chairmen’s legal authority over the councils.

The APC urged Adeleke to cease obstructing local government management in a statement signed by Kola Olabisi, its Director of Media and Information, on Thursday.

The party maintained that its members were lawfully reinstated by the Court of Appeal’s decision on February 10, 2025.

The APC alleged that “Governor Adeleke had disregarded legal advice and proceeded with the 22 February 2025 local government elections despite no vacancies existing at the time.”

Additionally, it stated that the Attorney-General of the Federation met with the governor’s delegates to discuss the ruling.

The party demanded that the reinstated officials be recognized right away and alleged that Adeleke’s administration was mishandling local government funds. It issued a warning that any additional blockage would be against the law.

The Osun PDP, meanwhile, has denied the APC’s allegations, claiming that no court decision restored the sacked officials. The APC was charged by the PDP with trying to deceive the public and sabotage the legal process.

The Osun PDP asked why the APC submitted a new plea to the Court of Appeal when its members had previously been reinstated in a statement signed by Sunday Bisi, the party’s chairman.

The PDP maintained the validity of the ruling declaring the October 2022 elections to be invalid.

Additionally, the APC was criticized by the PDP for allegedly misrepresenting the Attorney-General of the Federation’s stance.

It argued that “the legal documents presented to him clearly justified the February 2025 local government elections conducted by OSSIEC”.

The APC’s alleged plan to “forcefully take power through the backdoor” was also condemned by the PDP.

It urged people to oppose any illegitimate takeover and cautioned that such acts threatened democracy.

Both sides have persisted in claiming their legal positions in the conflict as emotions rise.

The PDP maintains that the courts declared their election to be illegitimate, while the APC calls for the recognition of its chairmen and council members.
