JUST IN: Igbo leader places strong demand from Gowon over war statement

Charles Okechukwu Okereke, a former governorship candidate for the Great Nigeria People’s Party (GNPP) in Abia State, has counseled former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon to apologize to the Igbo people and all Nigerians for his recent statement at the Aso Rock Villa immediately.

According to Okereke, he claimed that the apology would ease the minds of those aggrieved by the Gowon-attributed statement.

According to recent quotes, the former head of state said, “I know and if I can remember, when I was fighting the war, I was told I was too slow and probably Nigeria cannot make it and that we should seek discussion. Well, did we do it or not?” 

However, in an older statement to ZINGTIE in Umuahia on Wednesday, the former governorship candidate asked Gen. Gowon to hold off on saying anything that would remind Ndigbo and other Nigerians of the bloody war episodes of the past.

Okereke, who said that Nigerians were experiencing extreme poverty, observed that insulting remarks from a prominent citizen like Gowon may incite further indignation.

He claimed that Gowon incorrectly compared President Bola Tinubu to his military government. According to Okereke, the nation’s current crises stemmed from Gowon’s choice to establish a 12-state system rather than carry out a pre-civil war agreement he signed with Odumegwu Ojukwu.

What makes him make such comparisons to Tinubu? It is intended that he retire. He should keep the things we’ve remembered. His apology to Ndigbo and Nigerians is due right now.

“There is no comparison between Gowon’s military junta and Tinubu’s civilian administration. His 3Rs is not true. When he visited us at Government College after the war, he spoke from an armored car; is Tinubu speaking from an armored car? So why the comparison?” He asked.

Okereke claimed that the current efforts to change the Nigerian constitution served as a reminder of numerous issues with the country. In a legacy to his predecessors in service, General Gowon stated that it was incorrect for him to claim that hungry Nigerians were unaware of the underground problem.

The composer of the “All Hail Biafra” anthem made it evident that Gen. Gowon’s military government could not bring Nigerians together and was unfit to provide guidance to a civilian government.
