JUST IN: Trump disbands elite DOJ team tracing multibillion-dollar Sani Abacha loot for Nigeria

According to the Peoples Gazette, U.S. President Donald Trump has dismantled the Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative, an elite Department of Justice (DOJ) squad entrusted with tracing billions of dollars in assets taken by Nigeria’s late military Head of State, Sani Abacha, and other worldwide corruption.

A source close to the unit confirmed to The Gazette on Saturday that newly appointed United States Attorney General Pam Bondi ‘quietly’ destroyed the team earlier this week, as directed by Mr Trump, as his administration proceeds to wind down key federal initiatives.

Many were surprised by the team’s decision to disband, given it was in charge of recoveries and prosecutions related to billions of dollars in stolen assets, including the ongoing case regarding part of Abacha’s loot traced to Atiku Bagudu, President Bola Tinubu’s budget minister.

The Gazette had contacted Dele Oyewale, a spokesperson for the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, to comment but had not received a response. A request for response from presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga was also not answered.

It was unclear if the DOJ would continue to work with parallel processes to track down and recover Abacha riches in the UK and other jurisdictions, or how it would handle the case that was already pending in U.S. courts.

The administration of Mr. Trump declared that it will instead concentrate on busting up drug and human trafficking networks.
