The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State has rejected the results of the Shanono/Bagwai state constituency bye-election held on Saturday, citing widespread irregularities, voter intimidation, and violence.
Speaking to the press in Kano, the party’s state chairman, Yusuf Ado Kibiya, criticized the conduct of the election, labeling it unacceptable and urging a prompt investigation into alleged violations of electoral guidelines.
“We, the Peoples Democratic Party in Kano State, express deep concern over the conduct of the Shanono/Bagwai by-election. The death of the former representative last year already placed a heavy burden on our constituents, who deserve a transparent, peaceful, and credible process,” Kibiya said.
He condemned the reported instances of violence and voter suppression, emphasizing that such acts threaten democratic principles and diminish confidence in the electoral process.
“The use of intimidation or violence to influence voters or tilt the outcome of an election is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms,” he added.
Kibiya accused certain individuals of attempting to manipulate the electoral outcome for political gain. He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure fair treatment for all parties involved, highlighting the importance of strict adherence to electoral procedures, timely distribution of materials, and safeguards to protect voters.
He also called on security agencies to uphold citizens’ rights by ensuring free and safe participation in the voting process, and to firmly address any instances of coercion, violence, or vote-buying.
Additionally, Kibiya appealed to both the Kano State Government and national political figures to avoid using provocative language that could escalate tensions. He reaffirmed his party’s dedication to peaceful engagement and adherence to democratic norms.
“The PDP calls on all stakeholders, particularly the APC and other political parties, to engage in issue-based campaigns and reject anti-democratic tactics. A free and fair by-election is the foundation of representative democracy, and the authorities must act decisively to safeguard that principle,” he said.
