Abbas Sani Abbas, the former Kano Rural and Community Development Commissioner, has defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Abbas was a card-carrying member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) prior to his dismissal as a commissioner.
Along with Dr. Abdullahi Bichi, the Secretary to the State Government, and a few other cabinet officials, he was fired by Governor Abba Yusuf.
How the dismissal came after some NNPP leaders urged Governor Yusuf to assume tight control of the state’s governance.
In a statement released on Saturday, Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser to the Deputy Senate President on Media and Publicity, said that Abbas had declared his departure from the NNPP while visiting Senator Barau I. Jibrin’s Kano home on Friday.
Hundreds of NNPP leaders from Kano State’s 44 local government areas have defected from the party and the Kwankwsiyya Movement, along with thousands of their supporters, according to the statement.
The defection wave, known as the “Barau Tsunami,” saw thousands of NNPP members embracing the APC and thrashing their red caps, which are the movement’s symbol in Kano State.
