The European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations intervention project, in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Society, has provided relief items to 1,100 households affected by the 2024 flood disaster in Kogi State.
Abdullahi Abubakar, Acting Secretary of the Kogi State Branch of the Nigeria Red Cross, disclosed that the relief items were distributed across three local government areas, including Idah, Kogi, and Lokoja. The items included 20-liter jerrycans, buckets, Aqua tabs, and ATM cards preloaded with N77,000 for each benefiting household.
According to Abubakar, the beneficiaries were selected based on specific criteria, such as age, health status, disability, and pregnancy. He explained that the support came from ECHO, through the International Federation of Red Cross, to the international society, and then to the state.
The Nigeria Red Cross Society played a crucial role in identifying the most affected communities, using speed boats to reach remote areas. Abubakar noted that the criteria enabled them to target the most vulnerable households and communities.
Alh. Ahmed Ibrahim, assistant community leader of Edegaki, expressed gratitude to ECHO, the Nigeria Red Cross, and partners for providing relief items and training on how to use them. Ibrahim acknowledged that the community is always affected by floods and appreciated the efforts of the Nigeria Red Cross Society in distributing the items and providing training.
“Whenever there is a flood, this entire community will be overrun by the flood; right from time on, we always had promises from other NGOs that they were coming to intervene,” Ibrahim said. “Sometimes they will come for registration and even ask for tips before we can get registered, and at the end of the day, nothing happened.”
Ibrahim commended the Nigeria Red Cross Society for keeping its promise and providing relief to the community. “We want to show our appreciation to Nigeria Red Cross Society and other people who made it a point of duty to distribute these items to us and also train us on how to use them,” he said.
Abubakar noted that the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Society had implemented several humanitarian interventions under the ECHO project. He disclosed that 1,100 households across three local government areas had benefited from the project.
“Three communities including Alla-Ogane, Alla-Atenoguma, and Alla-Ichala, comprising 300 households, were covered in Idah, while four communities including Galilee, Sarkin Noma, Edo, and Kampe, with 400 households, benefited from Lokoja,” Abubakar explained. “In Kogi Local Government, four communities of Ogbangede, Irenodu, Onumaye/Edimose and Edegaki, with 400 households, benefited from the initiative.”
Abubakar further stated that the beneficiaries were selected based on specific criteria. “The beneficiaries were selected based on criteria such as age 60 and above, sick persons, people with disabilities (PWDs), and pregnant mothers, while communities most affected by the flood from each of the three Local Government Areas were selected as well,” he said.
