Kogi’s Social Democratic Party (SDP) has vehemently denounced the state government’s recent prohibition on political demonstrations and convoys.
In a statement signed by Isaiah Ijele, the party’s press secretary, SDP State Chairman Mr. Ahmed Attah condemned the action on Tuesday.
Attah claimed in the statement that the restriction was an obvious attempt to suppress critics and called it an assault on democratic values.
He also exhorted Governor Ahmed Ododo to take lessons from the past and refrain from engaging in destructive behaviors that have impeded the state’s advancement in the past.
“The party views this action as an attempt to suppress the freedom of association and movement enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Attah stated.
He urged the government to prioritize development above political ploys and underlined that Kogi was not at war.
Attah also voiced concern about the effect on opposition groups and cautioned against going back to the “dark days of repression.”
He then exhorts the government to change its mind and put the state’s progress ahead of political repression.
