The University of Kansas has received a generous $15 million planned gift from alumnus David Seitz (’70) and his wife, Katrina Roch Seitz, to support scholarships at the School of Medicine in Kansas City. This significant donation will bolster the Joseph and Berenice Seitz Medical Scholarships, established in 1993 to honor Seitz’s parents.
The gift will provide the equivalent of 17 full-tuition scholarships annually for in-state medical students, with a preference for those pursuing family practice, particularly students from Seitz’s hometown of Ellsworth. Seitz’s father, a family physician, and mother, a nurse, inspired his passion for supporting rural Kansas communities.
David Seitz reflected on his parents’ influence, saying, “My parents were both very passionate people, and I think that just rubbed off on me.” He added that his father’s dedication to providing timely access to physicians in rural lives “would make him smile.”
The Seitzes’ gift will make a lasting impact on the university, enabling more students to pursue their medical education and fulfill their dreams of becoming physicians. “I think [this] would make him smile” is a testament to the couple’s dedication to leaving a legacy that honors their family’s values
