January 7th, 2025, Los Angeles, California. The Pacific Palisades fire burns near Los Angeles, California, with huge plumes of smoke seen from Santa Monica Beach.
Charitable giving to relief efforts in the wake of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires has surpassed $650 million to date, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times. This total exceeds the amount raised for other recent natural disasters, including the Maui wildfires, which garnered approximately $450 million, and hurricanes Milton and Helene, which raised more than $278 million, based on data from Candid.
The wildfires, which ravaged parts of Los Angeles, destroyed hundreds of homes, and left thousands of people displaced. The relief efforts have been ongoing for weeks, with many organisations, individuals, and corporations stepping up to provide support.
Online fundraising platforms, such as GoFundMe, have played a significant role in the relief efforts, distributing $200 million in donations directly to those affected by the wildfires. “We are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community,” said a spokesperson for GoFundMe. “The generosity of our donors has been overwhelming, and we are proud to be able to provide support to those in need.”
The L.A. Regional Food Bank has also seen a significant increase in donations, collecting $5 million to date. “We have expanded our operations from six to seven days a week to meet the growing demand for food and supplies,” said Michael Flood, President and CEO of the L.A. Regional Food Bank. “We are working tirelessly to ensure that those affected by the wildfires have access to the food and resources they need.
The California Community Foundation has raised an impressive $60 million in just one month since the fires started. “We are proud to support the relief efforts and help those affected by the wildfires,” said Antonia Hernández, President and CEO of the California Community Foundation. “The generosity of our donors has been incredible, and we will continue to work towards supporting the long-term recovery efforts.”
The generous donations from individuals, organisations, and corporations will go a long way in supporting the relief efforts and helping those affected by the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
