Labour declares their stand on the N70,000 minimum wage offered by Nigerian Govt

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), two prominent labour organisations, have affirmed that they will accept the N70,000 minimum salary proposed by the Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government.

The decision of the unions to accept the offer was made public by Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, following an important meeting in the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Surrounded by TUC President Comrade Festus Usifo and other Nigerian labour union representatives, Ajaero noted that the unions accepted the offer because of the extra benefits included.

He pointed out that the President’s pledge to review the minimum wage every three years—a break from past practice—played a big role in their choice.

Originally, the labour leaders had asked for a minimum wage of N250,000 or more. Nonetheless, the unions were convinced to accept the N70,000 offer by the agreed sum and the assurance of recurring evaluations.
