Labour issues final ultimatum to Abia Govt, commences indefinite strike July 15

A last ultimatum has been given to the state government by Abia State’s organised labour because to allegations that the government has failed to pay the N30,000 minimum wage and the N35,000 palliative award.

Despite Governor Alex Otti’s assurances that new salaries would be paid as soon as the federal government wraps up its negotiations with organised labour, the workers have threatened to go on strike.

However, in a letter dated July 8, 2024, addressed to Governor Alex Otti through his Chief of Staff and bearing the No.ORGL/ ABS/Vol.11/002 signature of Okoro Ogbonnaya, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abia state, and Enogwe Ihechi, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), organised labour threatened to go on strike on Monday, July 15, 2024.

ZINGTIE was able to obtain a copy of the letter from organised labour, which said that the decision to offer a final seven-day notice was a result of the organization’s July 8 general meeting.

They said that the state government had been given a 14-day ultimatum, which had passed, but the government had not felt the need to hold talks with labour to find a solution to the workers’ demands.

The organised labour decided to go on an indefinite strike in response to the state government of Abia State’s apparent noncompliance with the national order.

The letter read in part: “Organized labour hereby issues this final seven (7) days ultimatum with effect from the day of receipt of this letter and states unequivocally, that at the expiration of this ultimatum, on Sunday 00hr, there shall be no further communication with the government.

“Rather, the entire workforce of Abia State will proceed on indefinite strike beginning from Monday, 15th July, 2024.”
